The CompEUte project, implemented by the Centre for European Constitutional Law (CECL) - Themistocles and Dimitris Tsatsos Foundation and supported by the Hellenic Competition Commission (HCC) and the National School of the Judiciary (NSJ) has been completed.
The project is an EU-funded initiative aimed at enhancing legal knowledge and skills of national administrative and civil judges in the application of competition law to the digital market.
The project commenced in November 2024, and the HCC actively participated throughout its implementation, contributing from the outset to the planning and organization of the project activities. Experienced officials of the HCC contributed to the preparation of the training material, participated as speakers in the project’s training seminars, and supported the exchange of expertise on issues relating to the application of competition law, digital markets, and sectoral regulation.
As part of the project, training seminars were held at the HCC and the National School of the Judiciary with the participation of members of the judiciary and HCC officials as speakers. The seminars addressed practical issues concerning the application of competition law, proceedings before the Competition Commission, judicial review of the Authority’s decisions, as well as contemporary challenges arising in digital and regulated markets.
The project included an educational visit to the HCC giving judges the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the functioning of the Authority, the procedure for examining competition cases, and the practical challenges involved in enforcing competition law.
The completion of the project was marked by the organization of the International Conference entitled “European Union Competition Law in the Digital Era: Challenges and Recent Developments,” which took place in Athens on 27 April 2026.
The event opened with remarks by the President of the HCC, Ms. Irene Sharpe, while distinguished representatives from the judiciary, academia, and European institutions participated in the conference. Of particular interest was the thematic panel entitled “The Application of European Competition Law in the Digital Economy: Challenges for Judicial and Administrative Authorities,” moderated by the Vice President of the HCC, Hara Nikolopoulou, with the participation of Ms I. Mamali, Judge at the Court of Appeals and Trainer at the NSJ, Ms E. Kallideri Judge at the Court of Appeals, Ms M.I. Rantou Référendaire at the Court of Justice of the EU, and Ms K. Skandali, Head of the Chief Legal Officer Department of the HCC.
The conclusions of the project and the conference are expected to further contribute to the effective enforcement of competition law within the framework of the digital single market, strengthening cooperation between national and European institutions.
We warmly thank the Centre for European Constitutional Law – Themistocles and Dimitris Tsatsos Foundation and the National School of the Judiciary for their excellent cooperation.
The Hellenic Competition Commission will continue to actively participate in initiatives that promote knowledge exchange, professional training, and the development of modern tools to address competition challenges in the digital era.
