Press Release: Dawn raids in the ferry boat connections sector

Subject: Dawn raids in the ferry boat connections sector

The Hellenic Competition Commission, as part of its work in sensitive sectors of the economy, carried out dawn raids on undertakings and conglomerates which are active in the ferry boat connections sector.

The unannounced inspections, which were carried out at the premises of the undertakings and conglomerates in the regions of Attica, Epirus and the Ionian Islands, were part of the preliminary stage of an extensive investigation into anti-competitive practices, pursuant to the provisions in Greek Competition Law 3959/2011.

It shall be highlighted that such inspections do not presuppose the involvement of the undertakings in anti-competitive behavior or in any way bias the results of the investigations.

The Competition Commission continues to step in, during these challenging times when the country is battling the COVID-19 pandemic, whenever its involvement is necessary, as the authority responsible for identifying potential violations of the provisions in Articles 1 and 2 of Greek Law 3959/2011 and Articles 101 and 102 TFEU. Facing the potential emergence of distortive phenomena, the Competition Commission, the guardian of the efficiency of the free market, takes on the pledge to prioritize, within the remit of its jurisdiction, every relevant case for which it is informed either through a complaint, an application for leniency, or other sources of information and will impose severe administrative sanctions on undertakings which have adopted anti-competitive practices.
